Backyard Trends to Leave Behind in the New Year(2023) — and What to Do Instead

It’s officially a new year. And with a new year comes new trends, including in backyard design.

But what backyard design trends should you plan to leave in 2022, and what trends should you replace them with in 2023?

A recent article outlined backyard design rules you should consider breaking in the new year, including:

Minimalism.

Clean, minimalist backyard design has been the trend for the past few years. But in 2023, a more wild, maximalist look will be taking over. Expect to see backyard landscapes that mimic natural landscapes (like a meadow or a forest) and more dense plantings of native (and drought-friendly) plants.

Concrete.

While concrete will always be a viable option for backyard hardscapes, in 2023, expect to see a more diverse selection of stones. Incorporating different types of stone can add visual interest to your backyard—and, depending on what stone you choose, can be just as affordable and durable as concrete.

Big pools.

Big pools can add a fun element to your backyard (hello, pool parties!)—but they’re also expensive and require a lot of upkeep. The good news? Your pool doesn’t need to be big in order to reap the benefits. Expect plunge pools to be all the rage in 2023; they give you all the benefits of a pool, just in a smaller space (and with a smaller price tag)—and as an added bonus, you can heat plunge pools to hot tub temperatures, which will allow you to enjoy your water installation year-round. On the minus side, they get REAL WARM in August in Phoenix!

I’m a Phoenix-area REALTOR and I see and follow the trends in home design, landscaping, paint colors, styles that are in-demand and selling and also keep an eye on what trends are on their way out.  Feel free to reach out to me before you renovate/upgrade/ change things and I’m happy to let you know anticipated ROI (return on investment) for what you’re planning.  I also keep a list of contractors, handypeople and such to help you find the right people for the job!  Happy to help!
